So You Really Want to Try Newt?

Is is just me? Or should African Americans be truly insulted that one of the most bigoted people the GOP could lift up is Newt Gingrich? Newt is the guy who said the only example of people earning money poor kids have is drug dealers right? Wasn’t it Newt who first coined the term Food Stamp President? Newt is also the guy who says that our kids should basically go back to slave labor to find a good work ethic. Oh yeah and Newt was also the guy who said Obama had a Kenyan anti-colonial worldview (as if colonialism isn’t the western version of terrorism).

The bigotry that runs deep in the GOP is appalling. It is evidenced by the fact that Newt won South Carolina and actually stands a chance to win the nomination. This is the party that ignores the FACT that most social service recipients are white yet they make it a black issue.

The Black man in me wants to lash out. The Christian in me wants to weep. How deep is the issues in these people’s hearts to make them loath the poor so much? What depths of greed languish in the souls of people who claim to be Christian but will leave their neighbor dying in an emergency room? What spirit inhabits their space to make them loath people of African decent?

Dr. King was on to something when he started the poor people’s campaign. What would happen if the urban and rural poor began to see each other by their shared circumstance rather than their different skin? How beautiful would it be if blacks and whites united against the terrorism the 1% has reeked upon this nation? I guess that’s why they killed him.

    Ron Paul Deserves an Encore

During the New Hampshire Republican presidential debate, a very strange thing happened. Ron Paul seeking to deflect attention away from racist rantings in his newsletters brought up the issue of mass incarceration. What was strange was that a Republican brought up the issue passionately. To be expected was the gross negligence of any of the other candidates or the moderators to explore it or acknowledge it.

As much as I may differ with Paul on many issues also may see that he was ultimately responsible for the verbal garbage in his newsletter, I can not help but give him credit for being bold enough to speak to a real issue.

Ron Paul is 100% correct. What community healing comes about by have someone apologize for saying the N word? What progress do we make by fighting public gaffs and cultural insensitivity? The real fight is the one that is affecting African American families and communities.

Mass incarceration has devastated African America and we have yet to demand justice for that. A Christian nation would set captives free and declare a Year of Jubilee not profit from racial profiling. Paul is correct challenge the War on Drugs! In the words of Cheryl Lynn Ron Paul “Deserves an Encore.”

Rev. Charles F. Boyer is HoodProphetic

The blog is back in full affect. For those of you who know me personally you know I have been finishing my thesis work and getting myself settled at St. James in Somerset. But I have been following the political scene very closely and have a ton to say. I look forward to 2012 as a year of great dialogue, insight and progress.

I wanted to start the first post of 2012 with the most basic statement. I, Rev. Charles F. Boyer,  am HoodProphetic. I make this statement for 3 reasons:

      1. Many of you probably didn’t even know HoodProphetic was my blog. I’m sure many more didn’t even care ;) but for those who do, now you know, spread the word and please participate in the dialogue.

      2. The purpose of this blog is to give a counter narrative to the Christian Right that has bastardized Christianity for political and economic gain, Pharisaic Egotism, and just plain old ignorance. These folks have often used code words like “urban” and “inner city” to describe a class and race of people (Black Folks) as “the problem” in America. Most of the information they use is often fictional, hateful, stereotypical, and unrighteous. The worst part is that America’s poor and urban communities don’t have the resources and reach to tell their side of the story in order to give balance. Jesus was/is a defender of the poor. I am a prophet of that very message for those very people. In fact I fully identify with America’s urban population. Therefore I am HoodProphetic!

      3. Finally I send a challenge to all of you. In your water cooler conversation, in your churches, sermons and teachings to be hood prophetic as well. Too much is at stake for us to be silent, especially those of us who have resources to get the counter message out. The challenge only begins with conversation. Let’s make 2012 the year where we organize movements against the evils of mass incarceration, economic injustice, patriarchy and the religious leaders who have kidnapped Christianity. Let me know if you’re hoodprophetic too!

      Peace and P.S.

        Dominique Strauss-Khan

Now the Dominique Strauss-Khan situation is so familiar. Here we have the powerful former head of the International Monetary Fund accused of sexually assaulting an African chambermaid. Wether he is guilty or not is not the issue here for me but rather the fact that every woman who makes allegations of abuse must have her entire life on trial. We saw this with Kobe Bryant and with the Duke lacrosse players. The fact that the powerful would engage in sexual relationships with the more vulnerable in society is a testament to their predatory nature. That’s my opinion, what’s yours?

Basketball Wives? Real House Wives? Nahhh The Real Sisters of Revolution!

There has been debate through out African American media recently about reality television such as Basket Ball Wives, The Real House Wives etc. that dominate television.

The debate is whether or not these shows offer any value to our community or if they harm us.

Reality television  is yet another corporate media volunteer slave auction that pimps stereotypes of women of all colors for profit. The sad part for African American women in particular is that the positive images for black women in television or movies is far and few between. So these shows have powerful imagery that African Americans cannot afford to be representative.

We show these images of sisters slapping sisters, gold diggers being glorified, the “B” word being magnified and stereotypes being normalized, all for the sake of the all mighty dollar.

The sad reality of reality television is found in two places. First our daughters our growing into woman hood seeing this version of dysfunctional womanhood as fabulous and celebrated. Second is, its only profitable because of the African American community’s insatiable appetite to devour it.

My question is, are we willing to bring down and crumble this profiteering from stereotypes by stopping consumption? Where are the Real Sisters of Revolution?

What do you think? How do we bring about a revolution to reality TV?

And Most Importantly-Where are the Sisters in the Black Church on this?

The NEGROS Still Have to Show their Free Papers

The sad part about this ordeal with Donald Trump and the “Birthers” is the historical significance it invokes. Historically Blacks were forced to carry their papers around with them in order to prove they were free. It also invokes the 14th Amendment where blacks were finally afforded citizenship. Despite the horrible treatment we had received in this nation we still were considered less than American. This birth certificate issue has proven without a doubt what blacks in the U.S. have been saying for years, “RACISM IS VERY MUCH ALIVE!” No matter what Barack Obama has achieved academically and professionally as a black man in America there is still a huge segment of the population that considers him incapable, unqualified, and unAmerican. Now that the birth certificate has been released, the question now is if he was the recipient of Affirmative Action. How many white presidents have been the beneficiaries of privilege? How many white people are the beneficiaries of legacy? But as usual God allows the sins of the nation to be on display for all to see. And not only the nation but its Christian Right whose bigotry was instrumental in slavery, Jim Crow and now birtherism. My beef wasn’t with Donald Trump (who has established himself as an idiot) as much as it was with Franklin Graham and all the so called Christians who constantly question the Christianity and Americanness of Barack Obama. TO HELL WITH ALL OF YOU! I’ll see you at the separation of the sheep and the goats! THE REVELATION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED NO JUSTICE NO PRIEST

Silent Assassin: The War on Drugs

Statistics prove that Blacks and Latinos teens are less likely to experiment with and sell drugs than white teens, yet we see them targeted by law enforcement. This disparity to target the natural rebellious spirit in all teens has led to the legal “Jim Crowization” of millions of minorities. Now they can’t get a job, can’t vote, and can’t get public assistance. We see Obama about to sign into law a measure that will reduce the crack/cocaine discrepancy to 18 to 1 from 100 to 1 where it was since the 90′s. That means that minorities will only be charged 18 times more severely for the same crime as their white counterparts. Where is the black church?, where is the outrage? Come on people this is RACISM IN CAPS! Shout it from the rooftops- NO JUSTICE NO PRIEST

            My Yoke is Easy

Prophetic Scripture often speaks of the “yoke” that is imposed on oppressed people. The yoke refers to political domination and oppression.

When the Negro spirituals used to sing about these “heavy burdens” they spoke of the “yoke” of slavery, Jim Crow, and racial cleanings that dominated them.

Today we have yokes as well, an unjust criminal justice system, economic predators, a financially segregated education system, an evil marketing media that preys on the weaknesses of the oppressed.

But to God be the Glory, In the 9th Chapter of Isaiah he speaks of the yoke imposed by the Neo Assyrain oppression to come and how it will be destroyed by the one to come:

4 ♫ For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
5 For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
6 † For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
